He spared her a smile. âYes.â Sheâd been at her sonâs basketball game as sheâd stated in her interview.
Joanie made a dramatic gesture with her hand to her forehead. âWhew. Just making sure.â
Unfortunately, neither Joanie nor the guards had any useful information regarding the murders, the painting or Meganâs connection to the victims. As of yet, Paul was keeping his conviction that Megan was being set up under wraps. He and Andy agreed that letting on that they were still looking for the true suspect might further endanger Meganâs life. They hoped that if the real murderer relaxed in the knowledge that Megan was taking the fall, the person would slip up and reveal themselves.
Focusing on his task at hand, he asked, âDo you know Meganâs cell-phone number?â He had it in his official report but not on his person.
âYes.â Joanie regarded him with a speculative stare. âAre you asking in an official capacity?â
As opposed to a man wanting an attractive womanâs phone number? He could hear the un-spoken question swirling around him. The answer was a little of both, but he wasnât going to share that

with Joanie. âSheâs a suspect in a murder investigation,â he stated, infusing authority into his tone.
Her eyes widened. âRight. Let me find it.â
While she scurried about the desk, looking for Meganâs number, Paul assessed the progress he and Andy had made in the past two days. The bartender at Figaroâs couldnât say for sure that either of the two women whose pictures theyâd shown himâLacy Knight or Jasmine Oliphantâwas the woman whoâd talked with Sinclair the night of the murders.
Paul had arranged an interview with Mrs. Drake for Monday morning. Mrs. Vanderpool had gone into seclusion, and her lawyer was running interference.
And interviews with Lacy Knightâs parentsâ
neighbors had been fruitless. Apparently Tuesday nights were a big night for not being home.
âHere you go.â Joanie offered him a scrap of paper with Meganâs cell number scrawled across it.
âThank you.â Paul took the paper and left the gallery. On the street he called Megan. Her voice mail picked up.
Dread and apprehension slithered down his spine.
There was no reason to believe she was in trouble.
But he still couldnât shake the feeling that something was wrong.
Paul started walking, not even sure where he was going. He just needed to move, to work off the anxiety growing in his gut.
Where was Megan? Manhattan was a big place to

search when he had no idea where to begin. He only hoped his gut was wrong and she was okay.
âDonât you think it could have just been some overeager commuter?â Dr. Miller adjusted his glasses on his thin face. âThe subway entrances are crowded with people shoving to come and go.â
Megan held on to her patience even as her certainty wavered. After her scare at the subway entrance, sheâd immediately headed to the one place she felt safe. Dr.
Millerâs office. âI felt a hand on my back.â But she supposed it could have been just someone trying to get past her.
